A ban on Microsoft selling certain versions of its flagship products Word and Office has begun. The software firm was made to change elements of the software by US courts after a patent dispute with Canadian firm i4i. Microsoft said that it had complied with the court’s ruling and would now offer “revised software” in the US. The court ruling means that Microsoft must also pay i4i damages of $290m (£182m). However, the firm said on 8 January that it had filed another appeal against the injunction.

Microsoft Office 2010
Microsoft Office 2010 in six version glory coming next summer
The most widely used productivity application on the planet is Microsoft Office. Microsoft makes the lion’s share of its money from sales of Office and its Windows operating system.
Windows 7 hit the market recently and has been racking up impressive sales numbers. As of mid-November, Windows 7 had been able to grab 4% of the PC market. It took Windows Vista months to reach the same point.
A new version of Office called Office 2010 is also set to launch — Neowin reports that the launch is scheduled for June 2010. The new version of Office will support ribbons for all products and a new Version of Office for Mac users will launch some time in 2010.

OpenOffice.Org
One of OpenOffice.org’s greatest strengths is its emphasis on styles. Some users balk at styles, claiming they are restrictive, but no other feature repays a little organization with so much ease of use and saving of time. Yet even those who are used to styles in Writer tend to overlook the styles used in other applications. That is especially true of graphic styles.
Graphic styles are found in Draw and Impress. They are to a drawing object what paragraph styles are to a block of text in Writer. While you could simply copy and paste an oval primitive when you need another one, by creating a style, you allow yourself the option of modifying all the objects that use the style in a matter of seconds, rather than altering each one separately.
Each graphic style is divided into three main characteristics: Object characteristics, such as line and area (color); Diagramming characteristics, which are used when you create a chart or plan, and Font characteristics, such as typeface and alignment. These characteristics are all spread over multiple tabs in the styles window.

Today Nokia employee Thomas Zander announced in his blog that Nokia will be using KOffice as a base for the office file viewer in Maemo 5. He also sent an email to the KOffice mailing list giving some more details about how this came to be.
“This shows that KOffice has one of the best technical foundations”, says Jan Hambrecht, one of the core developers of KOffice. “It is both lightweight, flexible and very fast, which makes it perfect in embedded environments like a smart phone”.
Nokia has created a customized GUI based on the Maemo 5 touch screen interface on top of the KOffice core. It has also worked on making the support for MS Office documents more mature. Thomas Zander of Qt Development Framework and KO GmbH worked on fixing bugs and enhancing support for MS Office formats.
The first presentation of this work will be at the Maemo Summit in Amsterdam from October 9th to 11th
