Release: KDE SC 4.4 RC1 Released!

Today, KDE has released the first release candidate of the next version of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC). KDE SC 4.4 Release Candidate 1 provides a testing base for identifying bugs in the upcoming KDE Software Compilation 4.4, with its components the KDE Plasma Workspaces, the Applications powered by KDE, and the KDE Development Platform.

The list of changes between 4.3 and 4.4 is especially long. Important changes can be
observed all over the place: The Nepomuk Semantic Search framework has made leaps: A new storage backend makes it a lot faster. Release: KDE Software Compilation 4.4-beta2 Codename is 'Claus', Released

Yesterday, KDE has released a second beta version of the 4.4 series, which will debut with a stable release in February 2010. While the first beta of 4.4 has been quite a bumpy ride, most of the grave problems have been fixed. KDE-PIM should be fully operational again, and for many users, compositing in KDE’s Window Manager is back again.

Meanwhile, the bug squashing frenzy is in full swing and will continue for another month until KDE 4.4 will be branched and frozen for release. Please help us test this version (you will have some time over christmas, no?), so we can make 4.4.0 and its subsequent releases ever more stable and pleasant to work with.

Release: KDE Windows Team Releases Applications from Software Compilation 4.3.4

Following shortly after the release of KDE SC 4.3.4 for Linux and similar platforms, the KDE Windows team is pleased to announce the release of the latest KDE software for the Windows platform.

Highlights of the release include a Qt 4.6 package and KOffice 2.1.0 (however, in line with upstream, KOffice 2.1.0 is primarily intended for testing rather than production use). Konversation 1.2.1 and KTorrent 3.3.1 are also included. Older packages from the SC 4.3 series should be binary compatible, allowing you to choose which packages you would like to upgrade to the latest versions.

You can install KDE applications on your Windows platform using the latest installer (Windows executable). Please remember that KDE software on Windows is still a work in progress, so applications can be unsuitable for day to day use at the moment.

Release: KDE Software Compilation 4.3.4 Released

Last month the KDE development community announced their plans to reposition the KDE brand. With what was previously just called “KDE” to mean the entire desktop and its packages, that is to now be called the “KDE Software Compilation” and KDE is no longer to mean the K Desktop Environment. There was also some other changes such as the workspaces now needing to be called the KDE Plasma Desktop or KDE Plasma Netbook, but that’s besides the point of this article. What has been released today is KDE Software Compilation 4.3.4 (what would have just been called “KDE 4.3.4″ a month ago).

Version 4.3.4 of the KDE Software Compilation brings a Plasma fix that makes it more responsive due to a pixmap cache fix, Okular stability improvements, Marble has been more polished, and the KGpg encryption tool has received some fixes for non-ASCII characters. Continue Reading »

Release: KOffice 2.1 Released!

The KOffice team is very happy to announce version 2.1.0 of KOffice, 6 months after the platform release 2.0.0. This release brings a number of new features as well as general improvements in the maturity of the individual applications. Importing of documents have also been given an overhaul.

The advantages of the clean and well-structured codebase have started to show. Despite a relatively limited developer group, there are a large number of improvements over 2.0. During the development of 2.1, it was also announced that KOffice is going to be used in the Nokia n900 smartphones based on Maemo Linux.

News: KDE 4.3.2 Released

The KDE community today proudly announces the immediate availability of KDE 4.3.2. As with any minor release, there are no new features but a strong concentration on further polishing the 4.3 series, which has been widely received as a release suitable for end users of all sorts.

KDE 4.3.2 brings a nice number of bug fixes including crashers. UI issues have been ruled out in KMail, and KWin effects have become more stable. There is also a good number of fixes in KDE’s core libraries, which are beneficial to all applications using KDE libraries. More information can as usual be found in the changelog. Most distributions will have updated packages available shortly, so do not hesitate to update your KDE. KDE 4.3.2 is a recommended to everybody using KDE 4.

The KDE project’s Sebastian Kügler dreams of a desktop that melts, like silk, into the Web. In a writeup to KDE developers he promotes Project Silk for better Web integration.

Sebastian Kügler isn’t appealing just to KDE developers involved in Web technologies, but also to application developers who want to add Web integration value to the user experience.
