An Italian Windows site called “Windowsette” has published some purported secret Microsoft documents outlining some design and strategy plans for Windows 8. The Microsoft Kitchen blog has provided some analysis of the documents. The documents appear genuine, and there’s lots of interesting information there.

In a big surprise, Microsoft is looking to Apple for inspiration, and these documents contain high praise for Apple’s “virtuous cycle” of UI quality and user productivity. They even seem to have looked to Apple for hardware design inspiration for a Windows 8 prototype machine (though they missed the mark – it’s ugly). They’re putting some thought into new ways of doing user authentication, including facial recognition via webcam. They’re putting a lot of thought into how new, smaller and non-PC form factors are going to affect the computing landscape, though they plan to focus their energies on Slate, Laptop, and All-in-One form factors. But in a recognition of smaller device trends, they’re putting energy efficiency and fast booting as major goals.

Probably the most interesting feature in the plan is “push button reset,” which is something that I’ve been asking for for a long time. When your machine starts to act up, or maybe you suspect a malware infection, you can automatically reinstall Windows while retaining your personal information.

And of course, Microsoft is planning an App Store for Windows. It seems that everyone has realized that as much as Apple’s app store concept robs the PC ecosystem of some of the essential essence of what made the PC great in the first place, the convenience to the user, and the revenue potential to the operator of the App Store is just too good an opportunity to pass up.

Engadget has more analysis.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4 was released just a few days ago along with Visual Studio 2010. The framework is currently only available for download but will likely be integrated into upcoming Microsoft operating system releases and updates.

The newest iteration of the framework improves on the current ones. It introduces several new features as well as performance improvements that both developers and end users will benefit from.

Some of the more important changes are:

Performance improvement including better multicore support, background garbage collection, and profiler attach on server.

Easier debugging including dump debugging, Watson minidumps, mixed mode debugging for 64 bit and code contracts.

Added support for Windows 7 multi-touch, ribbon controls, and taskbar extensibility features.

Improvements in performance and scalability.

Visual improvements in text clarity, layout pixel snapping, localization, and interoperability.

A full list of changes is available on this Microsoft page.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Download

Microsoft is giving more weight to the web installer in their announcements. They are often not mentioning that a standalone installer is available as well. Here are the links to both the offline and online installer of the .net Framework 4.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer)

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)

The standalone installer has a size of 48 Megabytes and contains all the files needed to install the new framework which means it does not have to load additional components from the Internet; Ideal for installing the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on offline computer systems with no direct Internet connection.

The web installer weights in at less than 1 Megabyte but requires an Internet connection to download the remaining components during installation.

Both links point to the English version of the .net Framework 4.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 requires at least Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and will run on both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of those operating systems.

Applications that require the Microsoft .net Framework 4.0 will – as usual – trigger a download of the component if it is not already installed on the user’s PC.

Microsoft has just added the security updates for April 2010 to Windows Update from where every Windows user can download and install them on their operating system.

A total of eleven security bulletins have been released that update the Windows operating system as well as other Microsoft software like Microsoft Office.

The updates fix security vulnerabilities in Microsoft applications and it is generally recommended to update the operating systems and applications as soon as possible to close the security holes and protect the systems from malicious attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities.

Five of the vulnerabilities have received a critical rating, the highest and most severe rating that vulnerabilities can get.

Open source developer at Microsoft, Garrett Serack announced today plans to bring a native running open source platform to Windows.

In a blog posted today, Serack announced the Common Opensource Application Publishing Platform (CoApp). The post outlines the challenges of developing open source applications in a Windows environment and the differences between developing on UNIX and Linux and Windows.

From the site:

CoApp will:

Provide a distributed, community driven package management system for open source applications on the Windows Platform

Handle multiple versions of binaries using WinSxS (I know, even the mention of side-by-side components evokes fear, anger and the desire to go off-diet, but bear with me, I think we’ve got a solution), including multiple copies of the same version of the same library, compiled with different compilers.

Support 64 bit and 32 bit systems, without hassle or collisions.

Place binaries, libraries and header files in a logical and consistent location.

Have tools and methods for handling dependencies.

Create reliable installer packages (MSIs) for installing open source software.

Facilitate sharing of components and allow multiple projects to easily both participate and consume them.

Allow for upgrades and patching of both libraries and applications.

Be Windows developer friendly. No forcing of building using ‘make’, but rather taking advantage of the nifty IDEs we already have.

Also be Windows admin friendly. Even if it’s open source, you shouldn’t have to be a developer to put Open Source applications on Windows.

Use advanced optimization techniques like Profile Guided Optimization to produce optimized binaries.

Support future technologies as they come along.

Aid in the adoption of Windows Error Reporting (WinQual) to assist in making software run better on Windows.

End the eternal struggle between Green and Purple. Unless of course you’re a Drazi and are conducting elections.

This announcement is one of the most notable steps toward open source development Microsoft has made. During an interview with The Chicago Sun-Times in 2001 Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer likened Linux to a cancer saying that it, “attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches.”

The one thing Serack’s exceptionally detailed post does leave out? A timetable. Though he does softly hint at a target in comment response. “I hope that you’ll be pleasantly surprised a year from now.”

Additional details can be found on Launchpad with a wiki at CoApp.org.

Initial sales numbers and market share reports have shown that Windows 7 is on the right track, but today it’s obvious that it will be one of the most successful products in Windows history, as it already caught 10 percent market share, approximately 3 months after it arrived on the market.

A ban on Microsoft selling certain versions of its flagship products Word and Office has begun. The software firm was made to change elements of the software by US courts after a patent dispute with Canadian firm i4i. Microsoft said that it had complied with the court’s ruling and would now offer “revised software” in the US. The court ruling means that Microsoft must also pay i4i damages of $290m (£182m). However, the firm said on 8 January that it had filed another appeal against the injunction.

Microsoft was smiling happily before the launch of its newest product Office 2010 later, because a result of their sweet time to throw torehkan trial version of Office 2010 beta to the public.
