    Release: openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 2 Released!

  • Milestone 2 is part of the milestones where we track new releases in the open source universe and test the building of our various distribution images with them. While milestone 1 introduced various pre-release versions of free and open source projects (KDE 4.4 RC1, OpenOffice 3.2 Beta4 or VirtualBox 3.1 beta 1) into our development distribution openSUSE Factory, this milestone is characterized by final releases of those projects. We are also preparing everything to switch to GCC 4.5.0 as the default compiler. Currently our staging version of Factory already builds with it and our compiler people document/fix the most serious issues. They aim at milestone 3 for the switch.

    ICANN: 77% Information Domain 'Wrong'

  • Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) disclose the information submitted by the applicant’s domain name when registering a domain name wrong. as much as 75 percent of the domain providing false information and not true.

    As reported by ITPro, Thursday (17/2/2010), ICANN released the data on the accuracy of WHOIS information (registrant, name servers). From the sample approximately 1419 domain names only 23 percent of it actually can be traced accurately and that domain owner. Continue Reading »

    News: Microsoft to patch 17-year-old computer bug

  • A 17-year-old bug in Windows will be patched by Microsoft in its latest security update. The February update for Windows will close the loophole that dates from the time of the DOS operating system. First appearing in Windows NT 3.1, the vulnerability has been carried over into almost every version of Windows that has appeared since.

    The monthly security update will also tackle a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are rated as “critical”.

    Release: Linux Mint 8 Released!

  • The Linux Mint team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 8 ‘Helena’ KDE Community edition. The KDE Community edition aims to provide a version of Linux Mint which uses the KDE desktop. This edition is based on Kubuntu 9.10, Linux 2.6.31, X.Org 7.4 and it comes with the latest KDE 4.3.4 and Amarok 2.2.1. Featured improvements in this release: OEM installation, possibility to ignore updates, multiple selection in Software Manager. Software Manager’s graphical interface is now easier to use and it shows more content. The layout was changed and by putting the screenshots in the corner of the application you can now see more software and more reviews at once. You don’t need to manually refresh Software Manager anymore. When new data is available you get notified by Update Manager.
