Fake videos showcasing the new Google Chrome OS have been making their rounds on the Internet in the last months. There have not been on the other hand lots of attempts to turn an existing Linux distribution into something that resembles the Google Chrome OS. Continue Reading »

The infrastructure around the recently announced Ubuntu 10.04, code name “Lucid Lynx” and scheduled for release in April 2010, is being set up at a rapid pace. The first alpha release of the new LTS (long-term support) Ubuntu is now just two months away, scheduled for 3 December 2009. But the entire development cycle has been altered; instead of six alpha releases, one beta and one release candidate (as is the case with Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala“), the new version will have only three alphas, two betas and one quick release candidate – a total of six (rather than eight) development releases. The final build of Ubuntu 10.04 is scheduled for 29 April 2010. For further details please see the Lucid Release Schedule page on Ubuntu Wiki.

I have been trying to get Teen Spirit to work for quite some time but never succeeded. The developers have in the meantime renamed their application to Jaangle and surprise, surprise: the music player does not crash anymore on my computer system. Windows users have lots of choice when it comes to music players from the popular Winamp to resource friendly players like AIMP2 or highly configurable ones like Foobar. Jaangle does offer a few features out of the box that might make it the prime choice for some users.
Probably the most noteworthy is the automatic recognition of music that gets added to the music player. It is possible to scan folders on the local hard drive for music. Album art and additional information are automatically retrieved by Jaangle and displayed in the player. This does include band and artist information which are usually not provided by many music players. Continue Reading »
Google Summer of Code has again been a huge success. Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 2500 successful student participants and 2500 mentors from 98 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all.
Google Summer of Code has wrapped up for 2009. We are pleased to announce that more than 85% of our 1,000 participating students passed their final evaluations. You can find more information about the projects completed as part of the 2009 Google Summer of Code, including links to actual source code produced during the program, by visiting the list of mentoring organizations for 2009 and visiting their linked organization’s home pages.
Folks interested in news about the program may want to subscribe to the Google Open Source Blog for regular updates. We will be publishing wrap up reports about Google Summer of Code 2009 for the next several weeks on the the blog, as well as showcasing stories from our upcoming Mentor Summit in late October 2009.
