gOS To Support Intel's Moblin Project

Tomorrow at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, gOS will announce their support for Moblin in an effort to expand the presence of this web-oriented distribution on netbooks (such as theASUS Eee PC 901) and nettops. According to a press release we’ve received they have at least one major yet-to-be-announced OEM partner that will use the Moblin-ized gOS on their Atomproducts. Expect more information soon.

WINE 1.0.1 Maintenance Release

Back in June was the release of WINE 1.0.0 and since then we have seen the continued development of WINE through the WINE 1.1.x series. Today though the WINE developers have gone back and released a WINE 1.0.1 maintenance release. Making up this release are just small bug-fixes and translation updates. First look to Firefox Mobile (Fennec) Alpha 1

Originally announced a year ago, Mozilla has released the ninth (first official) development milestone of Fennec, the mobile device edition of Firefox.

Current development is oriented and based on Nokia Internet Tablet platform (powered by Linux-based Maemo), and this first release is available for this platform only.

A Windows Mobile version is also in the works and should be available in future development releases.

As you can see from the screenshot below it pretty much resembles Firefox but with an even deeper UI simplification. The navigation bar for example is hidden until you pan the current page to the left. Then you get the usual back, forward and star button (tags included) and access to Fennec preferences.

KDE 4.1.2 Released, Deletes Files Faster

KDE 4.1.2 is now available as another monthly point update for the KDE 4.1 code-base. This release contains several enhancements to this desktop environment, among which is the new JavaScript bytecode interpreter “Frostbyte” for KHTML, Kopete fixes, KGpg fixes, and the delete file operation has been sped up by approximately 32 times. Ubuntu 8.10 Beta Released

As expected, the beta release of the forthcoming Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex” has been released this afternoon. In addition to the desktop spin, the server release of the Ubuntu 8.10 Beta had also occurred. Likewise, the 8.10 Beta releases for Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Mythbuntu are all available.

This release doesn’t contain any noteworthy features being introduced since the earlier alpha releases but bug-fixes and a few package updates. Details about this beta can be found in the Ubuntu Wiki and in the release announcement are download links for the various Ubuntu family products.

Installing Xbox Media Center (XBMC) On Ubuntu 8.04

The Xbox Media Center (XBMC) is a media center application for Linux, Mac, and Windows that allows you to manage/watch/listen to/view your videos, music, and pictures. It has a nice interface, can be controlled from the desktop or a remote control or via its built-in web interface, and it can be extended by custom scripts.
