Beta and Plugin Improvements in Google Chrome

  • After the beta launch in early September, from the first wave of feedback, we realized that a large number of users were facing plugin compatibility issues in Google Chrome. These included Adobe Flash videos not playing, as well as various browser performance issues with Adobe Flash and Adobe PDF document loading. There was even an issue where the browser consumed 100% CPU when users interacted with plugins.

This is exactly the kind of feedback we are expecting from a beta launch. We have invested a lot of effort into automating compatibility testing for large number of web pages but there is nothing like actual user feedback. We are impressed by the user response to the beta and the quality of bug reports filed. Nothing more motivating than a lot of users waiting for your work. :)

One of the big issues was support for PDF Fast WebView, which is the ability for a webserver to byte serve a PDF document. This allows a client to request specific byte ranges in the file while skipping pages that are not needed. This is supported generically by seekable streams specification in NPAPI, which Google Chrome now implements. This should improve performance with large PDF files or any other content served using Fast WebView.

GoogleBlog: Eight candles for Google Toolbar

  • Google recently celebrated its 10th birthday. As we participated in the festivities, we realized that we are coming upon another birthday: In just a few weeks, our very own Google Toolbar will be turning 8 years old. To celebrate, we wanted to take a few moments to reflect on its evolution over the past few years and how we’ve tried to make the web a better place for the hundreds of millions of people who use Toolbar.

Automatic And Up-To-Date Fedora 9 Installations With Kickstart And Novi

  • WooThemes - Quality Themes, Great Support
  • Kickstart allows you to do automatic Fedora/RedHat/CentOS installations (i.e., you do not have to sit in front of the computer and answer the questions of the installer). This is useful and time-saving if you have to deploy tens or hundreds of similar systems (e.g. workstations). Kickstart reads the installation settings from a Kickstart configuration file. The problem with Kickstart is that it usually uses the distribution’s packages from the time the distribution was released, i.e., it does not consider updates which means you would have to update each system manually after the Kickstart installation. This guide explains how you can do up-to-date Kickstart installations with the help of a tool called novi.

Google Sites now in 38 languages

  • In May we opened up Google Sites, and while the service itself was only in English, it has always supported the ability to add website content in any language. It’s been really exciting to see more than one million sites created in a wide range of countries and languages, for everything from anItalian improv theater group to a Spanish guide to Huitzuco to a Japanese computer store. With the addition of 37 more languages, it is now even easier for people and businesses around the world to build and host their own website on Google Sites.

The latest release includes full localized versions of the Google Sites service and interface, enabling website creators and collaborators to interact more naturally with the product in their native languages. Browser settings are used to automatically detect and display the preferred language among those supported. You can also override the browser language and set your language preference directly in Google Sites.

Here are the 38 languages we are supporting with this release: Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, English (UK), Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
